Sitecore and Optimizely are two of the industry’s most popular enterprise digital experience platforms (DXP). Several analyst firms routinely rank them as leaders, and both have delivered stellar results for enterprise clients worldwide.
But how do they stack up against each other? Which one is best for your business?
As partners of both Sitecore and Optimizely, we are frequently asked these questions. This article compares the two and gives you the information you need to make the best decision for your company.
Overview
Let’s examine both DXPs closely to learn more about their personalities and core offerings.
Sitecore
Sitecore is a digital experience software provider offering a composable SaaS DXP and an all-in-one Platform DXP solution to help enterprises launch engaging digital experiences.
Sitecore’s SaaS DXP offers an end-to-end suite of composable products, including XM Cloud, Sitecore Search, CDP, and Personalize. These modular software solutions are hosted in the cloud, while Sitecore handles upgrades and infrastructure, enabling businesses to take advantage of the flexibility and agility of SaaS products.
Additionally, Sitecore Platform DXP provides an integrated and cohesive full-suite technology platform that can be hosted on-premises or in a private cloud to enable complete architectural control.
Some of the key tools in the Sitecore suite of products:
-
Sitecore Experience Platform
-

-
Sitecore XM Cloud
-
Sitecore Search
-
Sitecore Personalize

Optimizely
Optimizely is a digital experience platform (DXP) that enables enterprises to deliver engaging experiences across every digital touchpoint. The platform was previously known as Episerver until it acquired the Optimizely A/B testing and experimentation platform in 2020 and rebranded as Optimizely.
Now, the Optimizely suite boasts several features, including content management, personalization, customer data management, commerce, and analytics, in one platform enterprises can leverage to manage the entire content lifecycle.
Optimizely can be hosted on-premises or in a private cloud. However, several SaaS versions of tools, including Optimizely CMS and Personalize, have been released to enable businesses to realize the benefits of software as a service.
Some of the key tools in the Optimizely suite of products:
-
Optimizely One
-
Optimizely CMS
-
Optimizely SaaS CMS
-
Optimizely CMP
-

Sitecore vs Optimizely: Comparing Digital Experience Platforms
When enterprises compare Sitecore and Optimizely, they often start with content management capabilities. Therefore, we’ll first focus on how Sitecore XP/XM/XM Cloud and Optimizely CMS perform in this area.
However, for DXPs as comprehensive as these, other considerations—such as technology stacks, marketing features, business strategies, and community support—are equally important and will also be covered in our comparison.
Content Authoring and Experience
Sitecore and Optimizely offer classic PaaS versions of their DXPs and modern SaaS versions of their CMSs.
Classic DXPs
The Experience Editor in Sitecore XP/XM provides a WYSIWYG interface, enabling authors to edit content directly on the page. This visual editing experience makes it easier for non-technical users to make changes and see the immediate effects of their edits in context.
A VP of Digital Experience for a Mid-Market enterprise said, “Content authors love [sitecore] because it allows them to create the experience and preview it on multiple breakpoints before the content is published. The Digital Marketing team does not need developers to configure campaigns, personalization rules, and presentation changes.”
On the other hand, Optimizely CMS is known for its intuitive and user-friendly interface, making it a go-to choice for content authors who need a straightforward, easy-to-learn platform. The drag-and-drop functionality allows authors to create pages easily, move around content blocks, and arrange media.
“Optimizely CMS gives users a very easy on-ramp to content management operation in the web space. The widget-based drag-and-drop UX allows web pages and experiences to be constructed quickly and easily. It integrates with many different platforms via connectors and API,” said a marketer at a Mid-Market Enterprise.
Verdict: Sitecore. While Optimizely offers an easy-to-use solution for content authors, Sitecore’s content authoring features are more advanced and robust, allowing them to meet the demands of enterprise content marketers. However, by adding its new Visual Builder editor to future CMS iterations beginning with CMS 13, Optimizely could close the gap.
SaaS CMS
Sitecore XM Cloud’s editor is a fully SaaS front-end application marketers can use to build websites and web applications. The XM Cloud Pages editor offers structured content authoring, content reusability, the ability to create modular content components, design customizable templates, version editing, and global content localization.
Meanwhile, Optimizely’s SaaS CMS features a new Visual Builder editor. This visual editor offers side-by-side editing of websites, tablets, or mobile experiences and intuitive drag-and-drop functionality. It also includes multi-language management, interactive previews, and multi-step workflows.
Verdict: Sitecore. While Optimizely’s Visual Builder offers a modern interface to meet marketer’s needs, it’s a newer product that doesn’t yet have the same track record as XM Cloud. Meanwhile, the Pages Editor in XM Cloud remains a market-leading solution, and Sitecore continues to improve the product year after year.
Technology Profile
Both Sitecore and Optimizely leverage the .NET development platform to power their PaaS solutions and have very similar overall technology profiles. However, Sitecore uses the older .NET 4.8x framework, whereas Optimizely uses the latest .NET framework, .NET Core.
Both vendors have recently embraced SaaS versions of their CMSs (Sitecore XM Cloud and Optimizely SaaS CMS) for easier customer maintenance and upgrades. Since they are building headless websites on these SaaS CMSs, developers can use any technology or JavaScript framework that fits their needs.
Verdict: Optimizely. Both platforms are built on robust and well-known technologies that developers are familiar with and continue to innovate to improve the customer experience. However, even the latest versions of Sitecore XP remain on the older .NET framework. Instead, the focus remains on the newer SaaS products.
Sitecore continues to update its solutions; however, without plans on the roadmap to upgrade to .NET Core, the technology in its PaaS products will continue to be a step behind Optimizely.
Approach to Composability
Sitecore has fully embraced composability with its SaaS DXP offerings, including XM Cloud, Sitecore Search, Content Hub One, and Sitecore Order Cloud. Instead of being locked into the entire Sitecore XP suite, businesses can now select the tools that align with their needs, adopting a best-of-breed strategy.
Optimizely’s entire product suite is also SaaS and fully composable since the addition of the Optimizely SaaS CMS and the continued addition of other SaaS products. Similarly to Sitecore, Optimizely has pivoted away from a complete PaaS DXP offering and is giving customers the freedom to select which products best suit their requirements.
While integrations with external products are possible, developers and IT teams may find working with tools within each product’s ecosystem easier. This is because it is easier to integrate three products from one vendor into a composable stack than three products from three vendors. The choice of solution will depend on the specific business case and preferences.
Verdict. Tie. Although Sitecore had some element of first mover advantage in adopting a composable approach, Optimizely offers the same flexibility as Sitecore.
Additional Marketing Features
Both Sitecore and Optimizely offer additional marketing features via the products in their suites.
Optimizely’s primary marketing tools outside the CMS are the Experimentation platform and Content Marketing Platform (CMP). Meanwhile, Sitecore Search, Personalize, and CDP are the primary tools customers consider outside content management.
Additionally, both platforms offer analytics and commerce platforms that can be used to build personalized shopping experiences.
Optimizely is built around its legacy of experimentation and optimization. Marketers can easily run A/B and multivariate tests, experimenting with content variations, CTAs, and page layouts to optimize the customer experience. These experimentation capabilities also form the foundation of Optimizely’s personalization features.
Optimizely Content Marketing Platform (CMP) offers an end-to-end solution for content planning, creation, approval, and distribution. It integrates well with Optimizely’s A/B testing and personalization features, helping marketers manage content efficiently and optimize it for better results.
Among Sitecore’s most popular composable products, Sitecore Personalize allows marketers to create personalized experiences based on complex rules, combining user behavior, location, profile data, device type, and other factors.
Sitecore Search is an AI-powered search tool that predicts search intent and displays individualized results to deliver a personalized search experience. Meanwhile, the Sitecore Customer Data Platform (CDP) enables businesses to connect, unify, and activate customer data to create deeply personalized experiences.
Verdict: Tie. Both Sitecore and Optimizely offer a variety of marketing tools as part of their suites, enabling teams to build a complete stack to fit the typical requirements of an enterprise business.
Community & Partner Support
Optimizely and Sitecore have well-established ecosystems but differ in size, structure, and available resources.
Sitecore has a large and mature partner ecosystem consisting of implementation partners, technology partners, and consulting firms. These partners provide services like deployment, integration, optimization, and support. Sitecore partners are categorized into different tiers (Platinum, Gold, Silver), depending on their expertise and project volume.
Sitecore recognizes top contributors in its community through the Most Valuable Professional (MVP) program. It also offers a range of online resources, including documentation, blogs, and a knowledge base. Comprehensive training programs via the Sitecore Academy include opportunities for certifications for developers, marketers, and business users.
Optimizely offers educational resources like the Optimizely Academy, where users can enroll in courses covering everything from basic content management to advanced experimentation techniques. Optimizely has a robust partner ecosystem comprising digital agencies, implementation partners, and solution providers that help clients with platform deployment and customization.
Verdict. Sitecore. Sitecore has a more extensive community ecosystem with a large, global following, thanks to initiatives like the MVP program and strong user groups. It also has a broader global partner and community presence than Optimizely. However, Optimizely’s ecosystem is gaining in size.
Pricing & TCO
Sitecore is an enterprise-grade DXP that offers competitive pricing. With the SaaS DXP option, where each product is available separately, the price can vary based on the number of tools selected to meet business requirements. However, Sitecore’s total cost of ownership (TCO) can be higher due to significant upfront costs, including complex implementations and customization for solutions like Sitecore XP.
Optimizely’s suite of PaaS products is competitively priced and generally easier to implement and customize, which means reduced upfront and ongoing development costs. Similarly to Sitecore, Optimizely’s SaaS-based solutions make the total cost of ownership easier to manage over time.
Verdict. Optimizely. Both enterprise suites offer competitively priced products. However, Optimizely can be easier to implement and maintain than Sitecore, making it a better choice for cost-conscious customers.
AI & Innovation
Martech vendors continue to embrace artificial intelligence and innovate with their new products, and Sitecore and Optimizely are no exception.
Optimizely, with its experimentation core, has integrated AI into its personalization and content recommendation products. With Optimizely, AI is embedded across the entire marketing lifecycle. This makes it easy to use and leverage for most businesses, providing generative AI, intelligent insights, and automated recommendations.
Sitecore integrates generative AI across its products, embedding AI assistance throughout the marketing lifecycle. Although the use cases for AI are less well-defined than those for Optimizely, the announcement of Sitecore Stream and Intelligent DXP could see Sitecore improve its AI offerings.
Verdict. Optimizely. With more well-defined use cases, Optimizely edges out Sitecore when it comes to AI and innovation features. However, with the introduction of Sitecore Stream and the beginnings of its intelligent DXP, Sitecore can close the gap.
Business Focus Areas
Sitecore remains committed to its composable approach based on its messaging. However, the release of Sitecore XP 10.4 shows that the platform will not be sidelined anytime soon. Between 2021 and 2023, there was some uncertainty around its direction.
However, from 2024 onwards, the vision has become much clearer, although there are still questions around feature parity as the newest features are added to the SaaS products instead of XP. Sitecore has also made steps to unify admin interfaces and make it easier for customers to work with multiple tools in the composable stack.
With the introduction of Optimizely One and the Optimizely SaaS CMS, among other products, many customers may wonder whether older Optimizely products will continue to be treated as first-class citizens. However, Optimizely One offers an incremental step ahead of Sitecore in unifying admin interfaces.
Verdict: Optimizely. Optimizely seems to have learned from some of Sitecore’s missteps when introducing its composable products, particularly around messaging. Additionally, with Optimizely One, they are moving toward unifying admin interfaces across the entire product suite to make the experience easier for marketers.
Why Opt For Sitecore
There are a few reasons for enterprises to opt for Sitecore as their DXP:
-
Superior Content Editing: Sitecore, particularly the Pages Editor in XM Cloud, offers some of the most sophisticated content editing features on the market. As such, content marketers can leverage Sitecore to create complex marketing campaigns with a user-friendly interface.
-
Advanced Search Functionality: Sitecore Search offers a more complete search engine experience than Optimizely. Its fast, predicted search, multilingual management, and other features make it perfect for various marketer use cases.
-
Refined Learnings: Sitecore was earlier to market with many of its latest offerings, including SaaS solutions, headless websites, and composability. This has given Sitecore time to make mistakes and adapt to provide a better customer experience.
If the content editing experience is critical to your marketing team, or advanced search functionality is required for an e-commerce shop or product lists. Sitecore offers the best solution for enterprises.
Why Opt For Optimizely
Optimizely also offers some compelling reasons to be the next DXP that customers choose:
-
AI-Powered Personalization: Optimizely’s AI functionality is more advanced and complete than Sitecore’s. Its combination of solutions, especially Content Recommendations but also including experimentation and testing tools, makes it a better choice for creating personalized experiences.
-
A/B Testing and Experimentation: Optimizely offers market-leading A/B testing and experimentation functionality and is the ideal choice for any enterprise where this is a priority.
-
Easier Implementation: Optimizely’s PaaS suite is generally easier and cheaper to implement than Sitecore’s, which can be valuable for companies that need to choose this approach due to regulatory requirements.
-
Competitive Pricing: Optimizely is more affordable to implement and maintain for smaller mid-market enterprises.
Optimizely offers the best solution for companies that need advanced A/B testing and experimentation or who are budget-conscious.
