If you are still wondering if Social Media works, take a look at Haiti. On January 18th, the Red Cross reported that it’s social media / mobile campaign had helped raise over $21 Million for Haiti. The Director of Social Media at the Red Cross - Wendy Harman – was “blown away” by the impact and success. Facebook and Twitter were given much credit according to CNN.
Although some mobile carriers will not send the funds on to organizations as quickly as people likely hope – because the donations are actually paid via phone bills – many mobile phone companies are weighing their hopes on consumers follow-through on bill payments and advancing the funds.
No matter what, the impact of social media is clear in the response to Haiti. People are engaged online. Mobile devices enable people to make decisions on-the-go.
Does your brand need to become mobile-friendly in 2010?
If your website is not mobile-friendly – you are potentially losing opportunities. We all get links passed to us via email, Twitter, Facebook, etc. Of course, some websites stand to make greater gains than others by being mobile-friendly. E-commerce websites have potentially the most to gain and the most to lose.
Pick up your mobile phone and go to your company’s website. How does it look? Try to navigate. If you have a poor experience, raise your hand and tell your company they need to make the website mobile-friendly. Maybe, you’re not sure what looks “good” on mobile. Here are some examples of websites that get it right:
- Amazon
- CNN
- Dell
- Jetblue
- Sitecore
- Starbucks
- Volkswagen
- Yahoo
- YouTube
