So I attended Open Text Content World this past week in Orlando, and while it was great to see a few familiar faces, it was obvious that Open Text is growing like leaps and bounds. I think because they are so big that the value of what they could deliver gets lost because of the sheer size of the company. The Web Solutions track which covers RedDot and Vignette was extremely interesting. They unveiled the product roadmap which shows 2 distinct products sharing a common set of features. I was assured that the RedDot product is not going away and that the P&L support the continuance of RedDot. Now I for hope this is true because I see RedDot as their Web Content Management offering and Vignette for Enterprise Content Management. Can either of them go up or down, sure but you are talking apples and oranges for budgets and required resources. I think it will be interesting to see what gets communicated by the Open Text Web Solutions group, what shows they attend and the planned activities they have in store for the upcoming months.
I personally think they need to figure out a way to leverage their partners to service current RedDot users and sell to prospective Open Text Web Solutions clients. The Inside Sales route will not be effective and the only things that will suffer will be the customer satisfaction and the revenue stream from the RedDot install base.
