Implementing Web Content Management

Implementing Web Content Management

Rick Patri... - Thursday, October 08, 2009

Regardless of the number of people I speak with, I'm always amazed at how many of them will spend boat loads of their budget on a CMS but skimp when it comes to an implementation.  Seriously?  With all of the MBA's and smart marketers/IT folks out there you would think that they would realize that a CMS is a tool.  It's simply that.  A tool.  The tool is only useful if the process for using it mapped out and clearly defined.  Only then  is the tool useful.  So why spend $50,000 or more on a Web Content Management System, if the tool isn't going to deliver business benefits?  I'm not talking about being able to edit web pages.  I'm talking about improved operation efficiency, increased customer satisfaction, lower TCO, etc.  Even better... go ask your VP of Sales if she/he wouldn't like more qualified leads.  Their answer 100% of the will be yes.  Well then define your business needs, your goals and your strategies before you implement the CMS.

Consider this for a moment.  You're not an expert, yet, in the CMS you selected.  So why not work with an expert, to help you look like an expert and achieve the best possible results.  At the end of the day, the C-Levels executives care about things like market share, lower costs, increased revenues, etc... not the features and functions you bought and why.  So don't be a tool.  Buy one, but then work with an expert.  Don't go it alone and be your own guinea pig.  Web Content Management Systems have the ability to make you look like a superstar with your the C-level exec's if used properly, but they also have the ability to make you look like a complete idiot if you don't have it implemented properly.
